Thank you for trying Peak 1.03 digital audio tools for the Macintosh. This read-me file provides you with the latest up-to-date information about your installation.
IMPORTANT INSTALLATION NOTES

1. If you are using a Power Macintosh, turn OFF the Modern Memory Manager from the Memory Control Panel and restart your Power Macintosh before launching Peak. BIAS has identified several incompatibilities between Peak and the Modern Memory Manager.
2. Peak requires that you have both QuickTime 2.0 or later installed and that you have Apple’s Sound Manager 3.0 or later. Both of these are available for downloading on Apple’s ftp and web support pages, and come with System 7.5.1 or later. We also highly recommend that you use a color monitor with Peak, set to 256 colors.
3. Please always leave about 300-500k free for the Sound Manager to allocate sound channels. This means that you should set Peak’s application RAM in the “Get Info.. window from the Finder to approximately 500k less than the total free RAM reported in the “About This Macintosh” window from the Finder. For instance, if your Macintosh has 8MB free in the “About This Macintosh” Dialog, you can set Peak’s application RAM up to 7.7MB in “Get Info...” window from the Finder.
4. If you are not using Digidesign hardware for audio input/output in Peak, you can ignore this note. At the time of this release, Digidesign reported that they had not yet completed testing of their Sound Manager Drivers version 1.4x. As a result, Digidesign was unable to provide BIAS with the System Extensions that enable their audio hardware on this installer. Version 1.31 of the Sound Manager drivers is compatible with most versions of the Digidesign hardware and is available on many online services. Version 1.31 works with Audiomedia, Sound Tools, and other Digidesign cards. However, version 1.4x is required for the Digidesign ProTools 3 system to function properly with Apple’s Sound Manager. Contact BIAS for more information, or visit the BIAS web site at http://www.bias-inc.com to download the required system extensions.
5. If you are running a demonstration version of the software, you will be unable to save documents, use External Samplers, or use Peak’s Apple Event™ automation. Peak™ version 1.10 demonstration copies expire July 30, 1997.

Peak™ 1.10 Release Notes

1. The transport now features dimmed hold lights. The transport also shows proper levels during playback of looped audio.
2. The playbar moves smoothly during playback of looped audio in Peak 1.10.
3. In addition to dynamic scrubbing, Peak 1.10 introduces tape-style scrubbing, which can be enabled using the Dynamic Scrub Time menu in the Preferences menu.
4. Peak 1.10 adds support for more audio document file formats, including QuickTime™, .WAV, .au, .snd, and System 7 sounds.
5. Peak 1.10 adds support for compression in audio documents, including IMA 4:1, MACE 3:1, MACE 6:1, and µLaw compressed AIFF files (AIFC).
6. Balloon Help for all Menu items.
7. New Playback... dialog for setting Preferences "Playback from Beginning" or "Playback from Insertion Point", master volume level, and hard disk playback buffer size.

10. Growing audio documents reveals or hides more or less audio, respectively. Older versions simply zoomed to viewing audio into the new window size.
11. Peak 1.10 adds vertical scaling to waveform displays. To increase or decrease vertical scale magnification, press Control+[up-arrow] or Control+[down-arrow].
12. Older versions of Peak kept a RAM cache for disk data on every edit region. This is no longer the case and as a result, edits take up virtually no memory. Peak 1.10 is much more memory efficient.
13. Option or command-clicking on blending icon at the lower left hand side of the audio document brings up Blending dialog.
14. Saving documents with Peak 1.10 is much faster for larger audio documents.
15. SHIFT-Cmd-N creates a mono new document if the clipboard contents are stereo or conversely creates a stereo document if the clipboard contents are mono.
16. Premiere Envelope in Preferences menu allows you to enter wet vs. dry curve (e.g. gradually apply an EQ) to use when applying Premiere effects.
17. Premiere plug-ins now have an **unlimited preview time** (restricted by available RAM) up from a maximum of 3 seconds (remember, this is RAM based so you'll need lots!)
18. Scratch Disks dialog indicates "Use All Disks" with checkmark properly now.
19. Optimization: disk caching turned off in some situations.
20. Holding down option when doing selecting the Fade In operation will bring up the envelope editor before applying the fade in. Holding down option when doing selecting the Fade Out operation will bring up the envelope editor before applying the fade out.
21. The envelope editor now shows audio in background if an audio document is open and audio is selected.
22. Preroll and Postroll durations save into the preferences properly now.
23. Progress Bar Time Remaining is now more accurate.
24. Blending was not working properly on the right channel in stereo edits. This problem has been fixed in Peak 1.10.
25. Blending now works with the Delete and Cut operations.
26. New Amplitude Fit... command in DSP menu allows dynamic normalization compression/expansion.
27. The phase vocoder works with Stereo files now.
28. The phase vocoder can be used to alter pitch independent of duration now.
29. Pressing the Up or Down arrow during playback sets the selection start & end points, respectively
30. Export Regions would only export SDII and AIFF file types.
31. The Transport window position is now stored in the Peak user preferences file and recalled on startup of Peak™.
32. The last audio document size used is remembered, stored in the Peak user preferences file, and used for all subsequent new document windows.
33. New Find Peak DSP command finds the maximum amplitude point in an audio selection.
34. Repair Click has been revamped and renamed Repair Clicks... under the DSP menu. Repair Clicks allows you to search for clicks in an entire selection, audition potential clicks, and repair clicks. This new feature is quite similar to many word processor's Find & Replace operations.
Peak™ 1.03 Release Notes

Peak 1.03 is a small upgrade that fixes several bugs reported by users, and offers a few minor feature enhancements.. The specific changes made in version 1.03 are outlined below.
1. In earlier versions of Peak, when pasting mono audio clipboard data into a stereo file, the result would always be 50% left and 50% right regardless of user setting. This problem has been corrected in Peak 1.03.
2. Peak 1.03 introduces the Phase Vocoder, a useful tool for time stretching audio without changing the pitch. The Phase Vocoder is available under the DSP Menu. Version 1.1 of Peak will allow pitch shifting of audio using the Phase Vocoder.
3. Previous versions of Peak introduced clicks into Redbook audio files. This problem has been corrected in Peak 1.03.
4. In earlier versions of Peak, the Threshold command would not identify the first region in the audio document's selection. This problem has been corrected in Peak 1.03.
5. SMDI Receive is faster in Peak version 1.03. Peak 1.03 now uses a SMDI packet size of 32k bytes instead of 16k bytes when receiving a sample from your SMDI sampler device.
6. Min/Max Drawing Mode no longer shows silenced areas as solid bars on the audio document waveform display in Peak 1.03.
7. In version 1.03 of Peak, you can now hold down the CMD key and then click on an audio document's titlebar, a pop-up list of markers is displayed. Peak automatically takes you to the location of the marker you choose in the pop-up menu.
8. In earlier versions of Peak, temporary file management was not updating the amount of available disk space properly. This problem has been corrected in Peak 1.03. Also, the Scratch Disks... dialog adds a "Reset" button to update the available disks and their available free space.
9. In earlier versions of Peak, zooming was restricted by the 32,767 possible slider positions. This problem has been resolved in Peak 1.03.
10. In earlier versions of Peak, audio documents did not refresh themselves after importing a CD audio track. This problem has been corrected in Peak 1.03.
11. Normalize, Fade In, and Fade Out are much faster in Peak 1.03.
12. In earlier versions of Peak, selecting a loop and then cropping it would delete the end loop marker. This problem has been corrected in Peak 1.03.
13. Earlier versions of Peak could become confused about which area was inverted as the selection, especially when zoomed far in. This problem has been corrected in Peak 1.03.
14. The Dynamic Scrubber updates the insertion point in the Audio Document's window much more quickly, and now features a smoothing envelope to reduce clicking.
15. In earlier versions of Peak, loop names with an odd number of characters would cause files created with Peak to open up in Alchemy and Infinity with incorrect loops. This problem has been corrected in Peak 1.03. Peak 1.03 also allows longer Marker and Loop names, up to 32 characters.
16. In earlier versions of Peak, Change Duration could cause a fatal error prompting Peak to quit. This problem has been corrected in Peak 1.03.
Peak™ 1.02 Release Notes

Peak 1.02 is a small upgrade that fixes several bugs reported by users. The specific changes made in version 1.02 are outlined below.
1. Convolution impulses (clipboard contents) are no longer limited to 65536 samples or fewer in Peak 1.02 and may now be any length. Keep in mind, this requires sufficient RAM as convolution is a RAM intensive DSP operation. Also, in Peak 1.01 and earlier, Convolution would not perform correctly on the first attempt but would behave properly on subsequent attempts to convolve. This problem has been corrected in 1.02.
2. In Peak 1.01 and earlier, AIFF files were opened with 4 extra samples on mono files and 2 extra samples on stereo files.
3. "Soft" colors preset has been added to the "Colors..." dialog. Colors Dialog will no longer crash if Cancel button is pressed and there are no open audio document windows.
4. Transport Meter Levels respond correctly when playing mono files in Peak™ 1.02. In Peak™ 1.01 and earlier, the right level meter would hold longer than the left meter.
Peak™ 1.01 Release Notes

Peak 1.01 is a small upgrade that fixes several bugs reported by users. The specific changes made in version 1.01 are outlined below.
1. Deleting audio using the delete key or the cut command will now remove any markers in the selection.
2. SoundEdit 16 Version 2.0 has a bug where AIFF files are two bytes longer than they should be. Peak now absorbs this error when opening AIFF files created with SoundEdit 16 without calling it to your attention (Error -39).
3. In certain circumstances, one could undo while playing a loop to a state where there was no loop, causing Peak™ to crash. This could also happen when using the Threshold function while a loop was playing. Peak™ is now protected from these errors.
4. After the "Goto Marker" or the "Threshold" dialogs, Peak™ audio document windows were not updating properly.
5. Undo will now remember the selection of the undo state you are returning to if you hold the shift key down while issuing the undo command.
6. Delete and Cut place the insertion point at the splice point, no longer at the beginning of the file.
7. Sample Rate Conversion overrides the blending setting to OFF.
8. A new keyboard shortcut for Insert has been added: command-D.
9. "=" and "-" keys zoom in and zoom out, respectively, and the SHIFT key modifies the new shortcuts to fit selection and zoom all the way out, respectively. CMD-"[" and CMD-"]" still work but are unavailable on some international keyboards. You can also use '+' and '-' keys on a numeric keypad.
10. Dragging the loop with opt-click towards the left in an audio document window now preserves the duration of the loop.
11. "Export Dual Mono" now uses the original audio document's name for output audio documents names.
12. "Import Dual Mono" properly closes the ".l" and '.r" files after interleaving them into a stereo file. This could cause a -47 error when doing an export dual mono and replacing the original ".l" and ".r" mono files.
13. "Import Dual Mono" in the File... menu was broken and works properly now.
14. "Threshold" can now handle larger audio documents, but Peak™ 1.01 is still limited to 256 markers per audio document.
15. Recording in 8-bit mode works properly now (Peak™ version 1.0 could sometimes record 8-bit files with Sound Manager "twos-complement" mode turned OFF).
16. "Home" and "End" keys take you to the beginning and end of the audio document, without loosing the insertion point.
17. Holding down the option key while selecting the DSP Menu Item "Normalize" presents you with a new dialog that allows you to control the amount of normalization applied to the audio document's selection. Enter a percentage from the maximum, for instance 90% of maximum.
18. Sound Designer II External Editor Apple Events are now supported in Peak™ from programs such as Deck II™ and Studio Vision Pro™, allowing Peak™ to work alongside these applications as the external editor. Please note that Opcode, Steinberg, and others may have to update their sequencers and digital audio applications to support Peak™ before editor support is fully integrated between Peak™ and the other application. Tell them you would "rather use Peak!"
19. Fade envelopes use a new file format that can be shared across Power Macintosh and 68k based Macs, the old envelope format is still supported. This new envelope file format is transparent to the old file format. If you wish to use your envelopes on a different Macintosh model, be sure you re-save your envelopes before using them on another Macintosh. Also, make sure the other Macintosh has been updated with Peak™ 1.01 or later.
20. Deleting a selection in an audio document could, in rare circumstances, produce a "fatal error" in Peak ™version 1.0, which has now been resolved.
21. The transport remains the frontmost window when clicking on expand/collapse window in Peak™ 1.01.
22. The following file menu commands are now available *during* playback : open, new import dual mono, frequent file open.
23. Insert would not function properly when inserting onto an exact edit boundary in Peak™ version 1.0. This problem has been corrected.
24. Anchored markers now "slide over" during Insertions in Peak™ 1.01.
25. Problems have been identified when using the Modern Memory Manager in low-memory situations. BIAS recommends keeping the Modern Memory Manager (in the Memory Control Panel) turned OFF when using Peak™.
26.The Ensoniq Sampler Transfer dialog now transfers stereo Sound Designer II™ audio documents on PowerPC machines correctly. Peak™ 1.0 would not recognize whether or not a Sound Designer II™ file was stereo or mono.
27. Peak™ can be launched with Virtual Memory turned ON now. However, we still strongly recommend that you keep Virtual Memory turned OFF when attempting to playback and record digital audio using Peak™. This recommendation is consistent with Apple's recommendations for recording and playing back digital audio.
28. In version 1.0 of Peak™, envelopes could become corrupted when using the "<->" Invert button. Inverted envelopes work properly in Peak™ 1.01.
29. BIAS has found an incompatibility between OMS and the Digidesign Sound Manager Drivers when recording. In order to compensate for the incompatibility, Peak™ now initializes OMS only when the Ensoniq Sampler Dialog is chosen. Make sure the Ensoniq Sampler Dialog is closed before you record digital audio using Peak™'s Record Dialog.
